The AI-search query types global buyers use

Overseas shoppers and B2B buyers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity in a few recurring query types. Which brands get picked for each, and how to respond.

Half of an AEO diagnostic is knowing what your customer asks the AI. Nobody searches for a "product brochure". Buyers ask in natural language, and the AI answers with two or three brands, not ten links. Overseas buyer queries fall into four types, and each has different conditions for getting picked.

Type 1 — recommendation ("recommend a…")

The most common awareness-stage query: "best Korean sunscreen for oily skin", "gentle serum for sensitive skin". The AI names just 3–5 brands. To be one of them you need a citable paragraph that addresses the attribute ("oily skin", "low-irritation") head-on. A brand that never states the attribute as fact isn't even a candidate.

Type 2 — comparison ("A vs B", "which is better")

A pre-purchase query: "COSRX vs Beauty of Joseon", "best value in this category?". This terrain carries a brand-mention rate 2.4× higher than informational (Semrush), so the brand that publishes comparison content first takes the answer. Without a comparison page that mentions you, the AI explains you using your competitor's comparison article.

Type 3 — sourcing (B2B, "find me a manufacturer")

B2B sourcing is moving to AI at step one: "low MOQ Korean cosmetics manufacturer", "OEM skincare maker in Korea". In long-cycle B2B, making the first shortlist of 3–5 is effectively everything. Not a company-profile PDF, but a page that answers real buyer conditions — MOQ, certifications, lead time — as text decides the shortlist.

Type 4 — verification ("is X legit", "reviews")

The buyer already knows the brand and is checking: "is X brand legit", "X brand reviews". Here the AI leans on third-party signals — Reddit, YouTube, reviews. That's why YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.737, the single strongest signal. Official-site copy can't win this type.
